Penny is a Nurse Practitioner who received her Master of Science in Nursing Degree from Duke University in May 2006. She Specialized in adult (oncology) and geriatric care and is certified in both fields. Penny has been a registered nurse since 1986, earning her Associate Degree at Asheville- Buncombe Technical Community College and her Bachelor’s Degree from Western Carolina University.
Penny has worked as a nursing instructor at A-B Technical Community College where she was instrumental in expanding the oncology curriculum as well as establishing a clinical rotation for students in oncology practices throughout the community. Additionally, she has over fourteen years affiliation with Mission Hospitals. She has worked primarily in oncology in the inpatient and outpatients settings. While employed with Mission Hospitals as a staff nurse, she served as a mentor to new staff, instructed in-services, served on several committees, and worked as a charge nurse. While employed at Mission, she was a recipient of North Carolina’s Great 100 Nursing Award. Her outpatient experience included home infusion and clinic-based care at Advanced Home Care.
Penny has been active in the community as a volunteer with the American Cancer Society. Her area of special interest has been in smoking prevention and she is the past recipient of the Sword of Hope, as well as the State Impact Award. She has been a member of Oncology Nursing Society for fifteen years and is a member of the Carolina Blue Ridge chapter of ONS.
